so I have been thinking about this a lot recently that tf2 has a lot of cosmetics taken from many cultures and I found a few that may or can be taken as ‘cultural appropriation’ but only two main one that seems like it really could be racist.
label: this is my opinion on the matter, I know it doesn’t mean much but do not take anything I say as fact
a few people have been saying this pyro hat was insulting to the Mexican holiday Día de Muertos (day of the dead) but those few people where also white. this hat isn’t racist at all and it’s silly to think otherwise. I am of latin decent and I can honestly say I don’t think this is cultural appropriation at all. let pyro wear their skull hat it’s fine.
the Geisha boy:
now this one is proven not cultural appropriation due to the fact that the Japanese community has already expressed several times that kimonos and the traditional Japanese hairstyles aren’t sacred, in fact, there are businesses in Japan around touristy areas that, with a small fee, will dress you in traditional Japanese clothing. this cosmetic is silly but not because it’s racist but because it’s simply goofy to wear in a battle oriented zone.
the big chief and the Chieftain’s Challenge:
these items are the only ones i truely see as being racist and a bad idea on Valve’s part mainly because the Native American community has expressed several times that feathered hats are a sacred thing only worn by the worthy elder and it’s defacing this sanctity by allowing it to be a worn cosmetic on Heavy and Soldier. the worst part is, is that it still can be bought at the mann co store for $5 each.
so in my honest opinion the only two cosmetics I see as needing to go are those two right there.
